Day Trips to Interlaken & the Jungfrau Region

Interlaken is the gateway to the Bernese Oberland and the most popular base for exploring the Jungfrau region of the Swiss Alps. Its name means “between the lakes,” and that is exactly where it sits — on a flat strip of land called the Bödeli between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, with the River Aare linking the two. Behind the town rise the three peaks that define the skyline of Switzerland: the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. For a first visit, the appeal of Interlaken is less the town itself than the spectacular valleys and summits that fan out from it — most of which you can sample on a single, well-planned day.

The Classic Interlaken Loop

The day trip almost everyone does first is the Grindelwald–Lauterbrunnen loop. Grindelwald is a postcard glacier village tucked directly beneath the north face of the Eiger, all green meadows and steep pastures under towering rock. From there the route swings over to the Lauterbrunnen valley, a deep, glacier-carved trench famous as the valley of 72 waterfalls. The most photographed of them, the Staubbach Falls, free-falls roughly 297 metres straight off the cliff, dissolving into mist on a windy day. A short detour reaches the Trümmelbach Falls — ten glacier-fed cascades carved inside the mountain and reached by a tunnel lift. They drain the icefields of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau at up to 20,000 litres per second and are considered the largest underground waterfalls in Europe.

Stitching Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and a stop in Interlaken into one day independently means juggling several train and cable-car connections. A guided day trip rolls them into one loop with the logistics handled — which is why it is the format most first-timers choose.

Getting There — From Zurich, Lucerne or Interlaken

Interlaken is surprisingly reachable for a day out. From Zurich, the train to Interlaken Ost takes about two hours, usually via Bern. From Lucerne, the scenic Luzern–Interlaken Express also runs in roughly two hours, hugging lakes and river the whole way — and unlike some Swiss panorama trains, it needs no advance seat reservation. Guided day trips depart from both cities, so you can leave in the morning and be back by evening without moving hotels. If you are already staying in Interlaken or the valley, you start with a head start and far more mountain time.

What Actually Fits in a Day

Here is the single most useful piece of planning advice: pick the loop or the summit, not both. In one comfortable day you can do the classic Grindelwald–Lauterbrunnen–Interlaken loop with time to spare. Alternatively, you can spend the whole day riding up to Jungfraujoch — the “Top of Europe” — home to the highest railway station in Europe at around 3,454 metres and a UNESCO World Heritage setting above the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps. It is unforgettable, but the cogwheel railway is expensive and the round trip consumes most of a day. Trying to squeeze both the villages and the summit into the same day leaves you rushed and on platforms more than viewpoints.

If you have a spare hour in Interlaken itself, the easiest reward is Harder Kulm, the town’s local mountain at 1,322 metres. A historic funicular climbs it in about ten minutes, and the viewing platform looks straight down on both lakes with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau lined up behind — the definitive view of the region.

Beyond the Classic Loop

The Jungfrau region rewards a second visit, and several day trips push past the standard circuit. Interlaken is one of Europe’s adventure capitals, and a tandem paragliding flight over the town and the two lakes is a short, beginner-friendly thrill you can slot into a day, strapped to an experienced pilot. On the Lucerne side, Mt. Pilatus pairs a cable-car ascent with the world’s steepest cogwheel railway and, in summer, a cruise back across Lake Lucerne. None of these require you to be an early-rising super-planner — that is the point of letting an operator carry the timetable.

When to Go

The most reliable window is late spring through early autumn — roughly May to September — when the weather is kindest, the high mountain railways and cable cars are fully running, and the valleys are green with the waterfalls at full flow. Winter has its own magic, but some high routes run reduced schedules, and a summit day like Jungfraujoch can be closed off by weather at any season.
